All Destin beaches remain open! We are continuing to monitor small tar chips intermittently coming ashore in the Crystal Beach area (Scenic Hwy 98 near James Lee Park). Clean-up crews have responded and are stationed throughout the area. The Okaloosa County Health officials continue to monitor the area and daily conditions and safety information can be obtained from lifeguards. The Okaloosa County Public Safety office in conjunction with the health department is the authority to determine beach closures. |

Yes. All state waters (out 9 miles) are open out of Destin. Federal Waters (9 miles and beyond) are closed. Fishing from beaches, local piers and in the bays and estuaries are open. |

Yes, at time of this publication; however, due to the dynamic nature of the oil spill, mariners are advised to monitor any openings/closures to waterways on VHF Channel 16. East Pass is a NO WAKE ZONE due to the protective boom placement and will be enforced in order to protect the boom. Boaters are asked to use caution around the boom areas and to help protect our coastal resources. |

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) carefully inspects all seafood sold and are taking additional steps to enhance inspection measures to ensure the seafood is safe. |

Situation: Monday 10 May
Weather conditions today permitted aerial dispersant application but vessel skimming and in-situ burning operations were halted. Over 1.1 million feet of boom have been placed and drilling continues on the relief wells. Due to the complications with the first experimental containment dome an alternative structure is being developed. The alternative is called a “top hat”. This structure plans to use warm water and methanol going down the riser to help prevent ice crystals from forming. Overflights today matched well with NOAA trajectory forecasts. The latest forecast indicates that SE winds will persist through the week and continue to move the oil westward.

By the Numbers to Date:
- Personnel were quickly deployed and approximately 10,000 are currently responding to protect the shoreline and wildlife.
- More than 290 vessels are responding on site, including skimmers, tugs, barges, and recovery vessels to assist in containment and cleanup efforts—in addition to dozens of aircraft, remotely operated vehicles, and multiple mobile offshore drilling units.
- More than 1 million feet of boom (regular and sorbent) have been deployed to contain the spill—and more than 1.3 million feet are available.
- Nearly 3.5 million gallons of an oil-water mix have been recovered.
- Approximately 325,000 gallons of dispersant have been deployed. More than 500,000 gallons are available.
- 14 staging areas have been set up to protect vital shoreline in all potentially affected Gulf Coast states (Biloxi, Miss., Pascagoula, Miss., Pensacola, Fla., Panama City, Fla., Dauphin Island, Ala., Grand Isle, La., Shell Beach, La., Slidell, La., Venice, La., Orange Beach, Al., Theodore, Al., Pass Christian, Ms., Amelia, La., and Cocodrie, La.).
NOAA’s Damage Assessment Remediation and Restoration Program (DARRP) is conducting a Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA). From past experience, NOAA is concerned about oil impacts to fish, shellfish, marine mammals, turtles, birds and other sensitive resources, as well as their habitats, including wetlands, mudflats, beaches, bottom sediments and the water column. Any lost uses of these resources, for example, fishery and beach closures, will also be evaluated. The focus currently is to assemble existing data on resources and their habitats and collect baseline (pre-spill impact) data. Data on oiled resources and habitats are also being collected.

Special meeting focuses on government’s
newest foreclosure-avoidance program
Local real estate professional attends
(Dallas TX) – Jane Araguel of RE/MAX Coastal Properties joined other real estate professionals from around the country at the Center for Asset Preservation’s Short Sale Summit held recently in Houston (TX). The two day meeting focused on the Obama administration’s newest efforts to help homeowners avoid foreclosure through “short sales,” which allow the homeowner to negotiate a sale of the home for less than the mortgage debt with the lender’s approval.
“The new Making Home Affordable (MHA) Short Sale program is designed to streamline and standardize the short sale process with a goal of helping financially distressed homeowners avoid losing homes to foreclosure ,” said Araguel. “I left the Short Sale Summit with a good understanding of the new government program and information necessary to help homeowners determine if they qualify for a MHA Short Sale and with the tools needed to negotiate short sales following the new guidelines.”
“Short sales are a well established foreclosure-avoidance tool, but have been so time consuming and complex to negotiate, that many attempts fail,” said Waco Moore, co-founder of the Center for Asset Preservation (CAP) which hosted the program. “The new Treasury Department program should increase the probability of success due to standardized processes, simplified paperwork, incentives to encourage borrower and lender participation, and assistance in securing release of junior liens on the property.”
The CAP meeting included presentations from HUD counselors who advise consumers about foreclosure options, a loss mitigation manager whose firm deals with hundreds of thousands of loans in default, an auction expert who discussed auctions as a short sale option, agents who handle short sales successfully and CAP co-founder Laurie Moore-Moore who covered details for the new Treasury short sale program.
